A Trip to the Orchard
Earlier this week I took the kiddos to a local orchard where we went sweet cherry picking. Aside from the few times we've picked things from my garden, neither of the kids have ever gone fruit picking so this was quite the adventure for them. It was nice to be able to get out of the house, step outside my office, and explore some nature together. We ended up picking 3 1/2 lbs of cherries and the kids did most of the work! After we finished, we went back to the farmer's market area and cooled off with a fresh, strawberry slushy. (It was hands down the best frozen fruit drink I've had in a long time.) The very last picture you see is from the pie I made from the cherries. Making a from scratch, lattice-topped pie has been on my to-do list for many years and I finally got a chance to try my hand at it. The crust was easier than I expected but where I struggled was pinching the edges together. For a first time pie I'd say it looked half-way decent and tasted pretty good. We made it just in time for Ethan's arrival home and it was nice to surprise him with one of his favorite desserts. Blueberries will be in season soon, then apples for Fall, and pumpkins too so I know we will make many trips back.
