No Shampoo - Day One

NO "POO"During my pregnancy with Skye, I discovered the wonderful benefits of living naturally. Since moving across country, it's been hard to keep up but we are slowly going back to a more balanced way of living.  Recently, this viral post   about the "No Poo" movement caught my attention -- no poo as in no shampoo and conditioner or any hair product, period. The idea behind ditching these products is that your hair will become healthier because it's not being stripped up it's natural oil. It is supposed to grow faster, save you money and avoid putting unknown chemicals on your scalp and skin. For the first two weeks, you are supposed to use a baking-soda and water paste for shampoo and apple cider vinegar and water for your conditioner every day that you normally shampoo.  After that, the goal is to use that combination only once a week. On the other days you shower, only hot water is necessary. And no, this isn't just for hippies or college students. Adele, Robert Pattinson, and Jessica Simpson are just a few who have said goodbye to hair products all together.THE GOALI'm jumping on the six-week journey to see if this concept is the real deal or not. (Plus, I know a lot of you are curious too!) I'm a bit nervous because I know that my scalp will start overproducing oil (wondering where the chemical-filled, oil-stripping shampoo is) but I'm hoping the outcome is worth it. And I'm just very curious. Some things I want to figure out are:

  • Will this fix my struggle with a dry, itchy scalp? (I've tried dozens of shampoos and all of them only work temporarily.)
  • Will my hair look healthier and grow faster as people claim?
  • Will my hair feel any different after 6 weeks?
  • Will it really be possible to use water only with the occasional baking soda and ACV?

DAY ONEHair length: 16 inchesTime between shampoos before it feels greasy: 3 daysToday was day one. I made sure to brush my hair before showering to avoid any tangles (since I've read your hair can easily become tangled with the baking soda.) I hopped in the shower, rinsed my hair and used my fingers to scrub my scalp with the baking-soda and water paste. I should've made more because I ran out almost immediately. It was a cold trip back to the baking soda box. :) I finished putting the gritty, paste in my hair and let it sit for a minute. There's no lather and no bubbles so it felt a bit harder to control than shampoo. I rinsed it out and my roots felt (surprisingly) clean but also very dry.Afterwards, I  put the ACV in a cup, filled it with water, took the ends of my hair and let it sit in the cup for about thirty seconds. After that, I dumped the rinse onto the middle parts of my hair (trying to avoid the roots) and then rinsed it out. My hair felt smooth and surprisingly enough, the smell rinsed out and didn't really bother me.I let my hair air dry and it feels great. It doesn't have much of a smell but I will take that as a sign of clean. My scalp feels clean and my hair feels smooth. I'll be sure to update after week one!
